Are all car brands are involved in Emission Scandal?

Volkswagen took a big hit last year with the Emissions "Scandal" in 2015. As we first expected, Volkswagen were not alone in the scam. This week it was revealed that Renault are also in the bad books in the motor industry. They will be recalling 15,000 new cars to fix an issue with the emissions. But also this week Consumer Advice service Which? have revealed that they tested various cars with some disappointing results. They have tested over 300 cars since 2012 in order to find out what vehicles are really pumping into the air. Their tests have shown that 95% of diesel cars and 10% of Petrol cars they tested pump out more NOx than limits allow. The Majority of the petrol cars they tested also exceed the EU Carbon Monoxide (CO) limits. A surprising element to the investigation show that even hybrid cars are not as innocent as they claim to be. Who is to blame in all of this? The manufacturers cheating emission levels or the outdated NEDC (New European Driving Cycle) test. This is the same test that measures official fuel economy (mpg) which has been repeatedly criticised for being lenient. So here are some results that Which? found. • Staggeringly, nearly all (95%) the diesel cars emitted more oxides of nitrogen (NOx) during our tests than official limits allow. One car, the Jeep Grand Cherokee, emitted 15 times as much NOx as the Euro 5 limit;

• One in 10 (10%) petrol cars also emitted more NOx than limits allow
• Two-thirds (65%) of petrol cars emit more Carbon Monoxide than the 2006 limit (Euro 4), with one model, the Hyundai Veloster, producing five times the legal limit in our tests
• Despite being a hybrid, the Peugeot 508 RXH also creates more NOx than EU limits. Several petrol hybrids (the worst being the Lexus LS) also create more CO than limits would allow
• 38 of the cars we tested were even unable to meet the ‘Euro 1’ emissions standards from 1993.
