What is the future for Diesel and Petrol engine cars?

Cars sold in the UK after 2040 will need an electric range of at least 50 miles.

Last summer, the UK government proposed that all petrol and diesel cars would be banned from sale by 2040.

Unfortunately, it was not clear what they meant by this. Would hybrid cars be included in this ban? How what they remove these cars by that date? No one knew. Thankfully, this has now been clarified.

It has now been stated that any car on sale from 2040 onwards must be able to travel at least 50 miles on electric power alone. Therefore allowing for both Fully Electric Cars and Plug-in Hybrid Cars. If this was actioned immediately, only about 2% of cars currently sold in the UK would comply with this rule.

The wording of this proposal isn't final. The Financial Times report that it's currently under discussion between multiple government departments. So I would expect a great deal of debate on this before anything is set in stone.

So it is not the death of the Petrol or Diesel car yet. Stay in touch with us for updates as more information is announced.
